God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth.” God added: “This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings.”

Reading II (1 Pt 3:18-22)

A Reading from the First Letter of St. Peter

Beloved: Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.

The Gospel According to St. Mark

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Anh em thân mến, Chúa Kitô đã chết một lần cho tội lỗi chúng ta, Người là Đấng công chính thay cho kẻ bất công, để hiến dâng chúng ta cho Thiên Chúa; thật ra Người đã chết theo thể xác, nhưng đã nhờ Thần Linh mà sống lại.  Với Thần Linh, Người đã đến rao giảng cho những tâm hồn bị giam cầm, cho những kẻ xưa kia có lúc không tin, đang khi lòng nhân từ Chúa còn khoan giãn lúc ông Nô-e đóng tàu, nhờ đó một số ít người, gồm tất cả tám người, được cứu khỏi nước lụt.  Và hiện giờ, phép thánh tẩy cũng cứu thoát anh em cũng giống như thể thức ấy, vì phép ấy không phải chỉ rửa sạch thân xác, mà đó là lời cầu xin Thiên Chúa ban cho một lương tâm ngay thẳng, nhờ sự phục sinh của Chúa Giêsu Kitô, Đấng ngự bên hữu Thiên Chúa, sau khi về trời, đã bắt các thiên thần, các quyền thần và các đạo binh suy phục Người.

Khi ấy, Thánh Thần thúc đẩy Chúa Giêsu vào hoang địa và Người ở đó suốt bốn mươi đêm ngày, chịu Satan cám dỗ, sống chung với dã thú và các Thiên Thần hầu hạ Người.

Sau khi Gio-an bị bắt, Chúa Giêsu sang xứ Ga-li-lê-a, rao giảng Tin Mừng của nước Thiên Chúa, Người nói:  “Thời giờ đã mãn, và nước Thiên Chúa đã gần đến; anh em hãy ăn năn sám hối và tin vào Tin Mừng.”

Reflections

Reading I

Today’s reading from Genesis, the first book of the Bible, tells us how the story of Noah and the ark ends. Noah, his family, and the pairs of living creatures on the ark have survived the great flood that covered the earth. They have finally left the ark and emerged on dry ground. Now God has placed in the sky a beautiful rainbow as a sign of the covenant between God and his people. God promises that a flood will never again destroy “all mortal beings.” Like a wedding ring, a rainbow is a sign of faithful love.

During Noah’s time, the floodwaters brought death as a punishment for the people’s wickedness. For you as a Christian, what waters bring life?

For many of the world’s people, water is very scarce and therefore a real luxury. We, however, may enjoy water in abundance and take it for granted. What will you do to show your respect for the gift of water during this Lenten season? Name one way you can remind others to show respect for all living creatures.

Reading II

This letter was written to encourage the early Christians to remain faithful to Christ who leads us to God. The writer recalls the story of Noah and his family who escaped destruction on the ark. They sailed through the flood waters to a new life. “You are now saved by a baptismal bath which corresponds to this exactly,” this letter explains.

In Baptism water is a sign of life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He died for our sins and conquered death so that we might enjoy eternal life.

What memories do you and your family have of the Baptism of various family members? How does blessing yourself with holy water as you enter and leave the church remind you of your Baptism?

How will you express your gratitude to your parents and godparents for bringing you to the “baptismal bath”?

Gospel

Can you imagine a movie scene illustrating the first part of today’s gospel story? Jesus is out in the desert where he is put to the test or tempted by Satan. But he is also surrounded by wild beasts and angel attendants. It must have been an interesting forty days Jesus spent preparing to proclaim the good news. “The reign of God is at hand,” he announced in Galilee, and he called people to get ready for God’s reign by reforming their lives.

Lent can be for us like a new day dawning – just like the one Noah and his family experienced when the flood was over. It is a time for a fresh beginning and a renewal of our covenant to live as God’s people.

In what ways do you want Lent to be a new beginning in your life as a Christian? What will you do to work towards these goals? Who or what might help you to experience Lent as “a new day dawning”?

Jesus stayed in the desert for forty days, praying and preparing himself for his mission. God has a mission for each of us. What can you do to learn what that mission might be? What might help you prepare yourself for that mission? What kind of “fitness training” might you do during Lent to grow stronger in resisting temptation as did Jesus did in the desert?

St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrow

Feb. 27^th

This lovable saint was born at Assisi in Italy. He received the name Francis at Baptism, in honor of the great St. Francis of Assisi. His mother died when he was only four years old. Francis’ father hired a governess to raise his thirteen children.

Francis Possenti grew to be very handsome and likable. He was often the most popular person at a party. He loved to have fun and enjoyed hunting and attending the theater. But there was another side to him, too. Even while having good times, he was sometimes bored. He couldn’t explain why.

He seemed to feel in his heart a strong desire for God and the deeper things of life. Twice he became so sick he nearly died. Each time he promised Our Lady that if she would help cure him, he would become a priest. He got better both times, but he did not keep his promise.

One day, he saw a picture of the Sorrowful Mother that was being carried in a procession. It seemed that the Blessed Mother was looking straight at him. At the same time, he heard a voice in his heart telling him, “Francis, the world is not for you anymore.”

That did it. At the age of eighteen, Francis entered the Passionist monastery and took the name Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother. The Passionists were preachers of the Passion of Jesus.

Gabriel’s great loves became the Holy Eucharist and Mary, the Sorrowful Mother. He loved to spend time thinking about the passion of Jesus and how much the Lord had suffered for him. His great devotion to Mary also caused him to think deeply about her sorrows over the suffering of Jesus.

Gabriel learned to practice two virtues in a special way: humility and obedience. His special trademark was joy. He was always happy and spread that happiness to those around him.

After only four years in the Passionist order, Gabriel died of tuberculosis on February 27, 1862 at Abruzzi in Italy. After his death many miracles took place when people prayed to him.
